Land speed record for normally aspirated vehicle broken, and some other incredible accomplishments too, by The Spirit of Rett

1.Fastest single engine car record in history 414.316 MPH (and only 3mph less than the absolute fastest "real car" record of 417.020 MPH held by Tom Burkland)
2.Fastest normally aspirated car in history (Broke 45 year old record set by Summer's Bros. "Goldenrod" on Nov 12, 1965)
3.First and only un-blown single engine car over 400 MPH
4.First and only car to ever set two over 300 MPH records in one day
5.First and only car to ever hold all four of the fastest un-blown records at Bonneville at the same time! A/FS 348.524 MPH, A/GS 350.728 MPH, AA/GS 368.136 MPH, AA/FS 392.503 MPH
6.First and only car to ever hold the two fastest un-blown FIA records at the same time

learned about this from the Grand National Roadster Show promo

On September 21, 2010 Dallas based racer and businessman Charles Nearburg broke the 45-year old land-speed record with his Red Line Oil-equipped "Spirit of Rett" streamliner. The fast and sleek car averaged a speed of 414. 5 mph, beating the previous record set in 1965 by the Summers Brothers "Goldenrod," by a little over six mph. In addition, Nearburg also set the fastest single-engine car record.

Where did the salt of Bonneville go? The BLM effed up... they screwed up bad

The Save the salt coalition http://www.savethesalt.org/Save_the_Salt/Save_the_Salt%21.html and SEMA http://www.sema.org/ got BLM to take action, do a study, and conclude that a replenishment program would stabilize the Salt Flats.

But BLM went into an arrangement with the the last mining company, and didn't make a regulation that would continue to force all mining operations in Utah to adhere to the same level of replenishment, and leave the salt in the Bonneville Salt Flats to the national landmark that it is... and not being sold in bags to apply to roads.

The company currently mining in Intrepid Potash http://www.intrepidpotash.com/ Based in Denver, Colorado, Intrepid Potash, Inc. owns and operates Intrepid Potash - Moab, LLC, Intrepid Potash - Wendover, LLC, both potash mines located in Utah; and Intrepid Potash - New Mexico, LLC, with operations in Carlsbad, New Mexico.

Buy your salt from someone else if you like racing in general, or Bonneville specifically

I got motivated by reading Jean Jennings editorial in Automobile Magazine, Oct 2011 issue

The Bucket List Dream Studebaker Avanti Bonneville and El Mirage record holder originally bought new by Bill Burke... is looking for dreamers w/ cash

So if you have money and need to be a co-driver / sponsor and get yourself a place in a land speed racecar- here is your ride! email Dan Sallia at dsallia@yahoo.com or call him at 805-550-7758

Dan has a “Bucket List” with 4 items on the list. #4 is simply the dream to drive a Studebaker at the Bonneville Salt Flats. The first opportunity was a ’53 Coupe, but that fell through. Then a fellow Stude enthusiast contacted Dan. He said that he had just purchased “an old Bonneville car” from eBay. This guy offered to loan Dan the car to fulfill his Bucket List Dream #4.

After doing some research on the Avanti, it was the World Famous #90 Bill Burke car, the same Bill Burke who ran the first Belly Tank Lakester in land speed racing.
Bill Burke bought the car while working for Hot Rod Magazine in 1962. It was delivered to Grantell Enterprises and came with a 229 cu in Paxton blown engine in the car and a 304 cu in engine in a crate. The car was born to break records at Bonneville, literally, as the President of Studebaker assigned the car for this specific purpose, Land Speed Racing.

The above text is excerpted from http://www.myrideisme.com/Blog/burke-bros-bonneville-bucket-list-studebaker-avanti

Andy Granatelli is providing technical assistance, and once the Avanti competes in the next year or two it will spend time in the Granatelli Studebaker museum, among others... like the Wally Parks NHRA museum in Pomona
