Why can you find neighborhoods without garages? Steve at Servicide knew, and it's just one good reason to admire historians!

The neighborhoods without garages were built by developers before the car became common enough to necessitate a garage per house.

Learn what this had to do with the comic Gasoline Alley at http://www.shorpy.com/node/11178#comment-124395 where Shorpy posted a representative photo, and Steve commented and told us what the situation was

Bots dots.. .. did you know they come in 4 colors?

the blue ones are to indicate fire hydrants so the fire department can find them in the dark, yellow ones indicate the center of the road, white indicate the lane divisions, and red... red are what you'll see if you shine a light up the wrong direction in a one way street

Botts' dots are rarely used in regions with substantial snowfall because snow plows destroy them

2009 list of most stolen cars just released... Audi S8 topped the list of "most stolen per thousand made"

After the Audi, with a rate of 0.81 stolen per 1,000, comes the Ford Shelby GT500 Mustang, 8.61; BMW M5, 7.58; Dodge Charger, 6.47; and Honda S2000, 5.60; the Detroit News reports. The problem is that the latest data is from 2009.
At least it's fairly comprehensive data. The NCIC theft data is based on information provided from about 23,000 criminal justice agencies and other law enforcement authorities throughout the United States, the News says. Full-size pickups weren't included in this report.
With the adjustment for number of vehicles sold, the Toyota Corolla was the most stolen vehicle. It also happened to be the top car sold that year.

Manny Moe and Jack hit 90 years old

Found in Sept 2011 issue of Muscle Car Review

So if you have some Pep Boys stuff they might be interested in, drop them a line: http://www.pepboys.com/about_pep_boys/media_center/press_releases/2011/pep_boys_90th_anniversary

Pop Culture Icons

In conjunction with the anniversary year, Pep Boys is launching a nationwide search for branded memorabilia to uncover previously lost or unknown artifacts from the Company’s past. Found items will ultimately come to rest in permanent display at the Pep Boys’ corporate archives in Philadelphia. Noteworthy submissions may also be included in nationwide museum exhibits.
The 90th anniversary of The Pep Boys – Manny, Moe & Jack is more than just a company celebration of its success within the automotive industry; it commemorates the evolution as an iconic business. The forever-recognizable caricatures of the three Navy veterans that founded the company in 1921 changed the face of American advertising and were eventually implanted into American pop culture. Entertainment figures throughout the last fifty years have been quoted using the expression “Everyone including Manny, Moe & Jack…” In short, they were not only woven into the fabric of the American motoring experience, but also forever established in the country’s pop culture lexicon.

Since the early days, the Pep Boys have always been recognized as pop culture icons. Shows from Mork & Mindy to The Simpsons have paid homage to Manny, Moe & Jack, while national broadcast hosts have long asked for “the Boys” to make appearances on shows such as The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, The Today Show, Jeopardy and The Rosie O’Donnell Show. Hollywood hasn’t left them out either – Pep Boys appear in such movies as The American President, Earthquake, Boys on the Side and Poetic Justice to name a few. There was even a song called Manny, Moe & Jack written by punk rock group, the Dickies in 1979.
“We believe that Manny, Moe & Jack are the heart of the brand – they are the icons that differentiate us from the competition and their legacy lives on,” said company President and CEO Mike Odell. “In the past 90 years, Pep Boys was witness to many of the greatest American achievements; we emerged from the depths of the Great-Depression, landed a man on the moon and ushered in the digital revolution with computers and the Internet. Through a mixture of hard work and good luck, we’ve had great fortune over the last 90 years and are proud to be considered an American institution. We look forward to what the next nine decades hold for the company and for America.”

Susan G Komen for the Cure Of Breast Cancer foundation is getting more car companies (Fiat and Symbolic Motors) to participate in raising Breast Cancer awareness and funds

The Pink Ribbon is based on the top-of-the-line 2012 Fiat 500 Lounge. Adding the Pink Ribbon package gives the buyer the option of two paint colors–silver or white–and a deep pink stripe running down the side of the car. The stripe’s 500 logo also has a pink ribbon.

Inside, the Pink Ribbon continues to use pink accents, albeit subtly. The black leather seats get pink contrast stitching and 500 logos, the floormats get pink embroidery for the 500 logo, and the leather steering wheel gets pink stitching. To top it off, Fiat throws out the 500’s standard black key fob and gives the Pink Ribbon model a white fob with–you guessed it–a pink ribbon painted on the front.

Including destination fees, pricing for the Pink Ribbon will start at $22,500, which is about $2500 more over the cost of a 500 Lounge, but only $300 more than if you ordered similar content as stand-alone options. That isn’t bad, but the biggest hallmark of the Pink Ribbon comes from Fiat: the company will donate $1000 to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation for each car sold, and has committed to donating at least $50,000 to the organization.

Fiat will make 250 Pink Ribbon editions http://www.fiatusa.com/en/pinkribbon/exterior/ and

Passion Pink” Continental GT is probably the most important. Some of the proceeds from the car’s sale will go to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure non-for-profit to further breast cancer research.

The Passon Pink GT is allegedly bespoke, and has been commissioned by Bentley San Diego– through Bentley’s own in-house customization program, no less — to help increase awareness for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure, San Diego.

To announce the car, Bentley San Diego and Susan G. Komen for the Cure’s San Diego chapter have teamed up to throw “a night out in pink” this Friday, October 28 at the W Hotel. The streets will be lined with Bentleys, pink cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, and a pink carpet for guests to walk upon entering the venue. Charles Koll Jewelers will also be unveiling a new line of Komen-inspired jewelry, and the beer will be provided by Green Flash Brewing Company, owned by breast cancer survivor Lisa Hinkley.

“This is an event you absolutely don’t want to miss. While this car is stunning, it is going to save lives with the money that is raised and there is nothing more beautiful than that,” said Laura Farmer Sherman, the executive director of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, San Diego and a breast cancer survivor.

The 2012 Bentley Continental GT is powered by a twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter W-12 making 567 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. The standard GT retails for $192,495 including destination charges, and it’s expected that the “Passion Pink” car will fetch a fair bit more. However, tickets for this Friday’s event only cost $20.

Symbolic Motors of La Jolla, California, has commissioned the only factory-built "Passion Pink" 2012 Bentley GT in the World. The New GT is being produced to contribute awareness of the Susan G. Komen
Foundation for the Cure. This vehicle's code name is "Cure". Royal Families and Celebrities over the years have commissioned special edition vehicles through a bespoke design division of Bentley Motors, located at the factory in Crewe, England where all Bentley's are born. The design studio caters to Bentley VIP's and offers exclusive services to meet the imaginations of these high profile clients. This Bentley is being offered for sale with a portion of the proceeds going to the Foundation. Please join us in our efforts to raise awareness and contribute to the cause."
Those of you who like such machines and are looking for something quite different, need look no further. It might take a gentleman of strong confidence to drive such a car in public, or perhaps it might be the perfect gift for the lovely lady who simply has everything... everything that is except a Pink Bentley. Here is your chance, to beat Paris Hilton or Lady Gaga to the table and own something to make both jealous enough to breathe fire while helping a worthwhile cause all at the same time.

Nascar trivia... what did a yellow rear bumper mean?

That the driver was a rookie. Used in 1973 that I know of, maybe other years.

Chevy info / trivia / interesting stuff found in Automobile Magazines 100 years of Chevrolet

Founded by Billy Durant, it was one of three car companies he founded that year (he had founded GM years before, but got fired) He founded 2 more companies the next year

Durant did so well with Chevy, that by 1915, he took over control of GM... yeah, Chevy bought out GM.

The depression in 1920 jsut decimated his businesses., and he left in Dec, 1920

When Chevrolet started in business, there were 270 car companies in America

How American is Chevrolet? Well, Louis Chevrolet was Swiss, Zora Arkus Duntov was Belgian... you get the point right? Immigrants are Americas greatest asset, and they made Chevy and GM one of the few comapnies to survive 100 years, and one of only a handful of car manufacturers to stay in the car making business for 100 years or more.

Durant wanted to capitalize on Louis Chevrolet's racing notoriety, and had Lou design a car. It was completed in 1912. Lou quit because Durant nagged about his smoking, and went on to design Indy winning race cars, and found the Frontenac car company

1915 was the year Chevy tried to compete with the less expensive Ford, and made the 490 which was the same price as the Ford (Fiat 500 was the cost in thousands of Lira for a cinquecento) Ford retaliated by dropping his price by 50 bucks. Lots of money in 1915

1923 Chevy had 500 copper air fin equipped cars available, as this early in the car making development process, getting water cooling to work wasn't perfected for another 30 years, and the Franklin was successful as an aircooled engine... they work fine in hot climates, like the American mid and southwest.
The Copper Cooled Chevys were a flop, they detonated terrribly, and of the 100 bought by customers, all but 2 were reaquired by Chevy, AND DUMPED THEM IN LAKE EIRE!

Fangio's first big victory was in a Chevy Master 85. It was an endurance race round trip Buenos Aires to Lima and back

The longest running nameplate in auto history is the Chevy Suburban, launched in 1935

The 55 Chevy Bel Air grill design was ripped off from Ferrari. It only was used in 55.

Chevy's first international competition win was a 1953 210 sedan in the La Carrera Panamericana

1960 Daytona 500, the Junior Johnson Chevy was 20 mph slower than the leading Pontiacs,... and Junior discovered drafting, and won the race. He'd been in prison for running moonshine in 57 and couldn't race in first NASCAR Grand National Championship

Jim Halls Chaparral 2J "sucker car" used a 2 stroke snowmobile engine to produce suction in the ground effects race car to capitalize on the design

The Nassau Speed Week of Dec 1963 proved that the Corvette Grand Sport could beat the Shelby Cobras and Ferrari 250 GTOs ... but that was the last call for Chevy in racing before the AMA ban. Zora was about to take them to Sebring and LeMans

The Chevy LUV (light utility vehicle) was the first Chevy sold in the US built by a foreign manufacturer. Isuzu

The Vega had 2 notorious recalls, the rear tires falling off, and the carb filling with gas til it spilled out onto the engine onto overheating aluminum engines

GM went into partnership with Toyota to get better manufacturing processes and production systems, and reopened a GM facility in Fremont Ca, and Toyota would gain experience in building cars in the US. UAW workers were flown to Japan, learned the Toyota way, production began in 1984, was an immediate success, and they built 8 million cars before shutting down in 2009. The things learned from Toyota were implemented in GM in 1992

Dick Guldstrand was commisioned to make a high speed Corvette to test Bridgestones, he hit 176 at Talledega . It's in the auction cycle right now, and it didn't sell at 40 thou.

1965 Chevelle Malibu SS, only 201 made... out of 70,000 Chevelles that year

Only one was covertible, built for Dan Blocker, because he played a rancher on the tv show Bonanza, and his cowboy hat was huge... and he wanted to drive in parades in character with that huge hat, and Chevrolet was a big sponser of the show.

When Chevrolet released the Chevelle Malibu SS in the summer of 1965 it produced only 201 of them out of a total of 70,000 Chevelles of various models. This muscle car had all the ingredients to be a hit; stunning good looks, power, and a very limited number. And it was a major hit. Chevrolets sponsorship of the hit tv show Bonanza helped push the brand with one of the stars, big Dan Blocker, who played Hoss, being an enthusiast of the Chevelle Malibu SS. Most of the car magazines ran some sort of article on the 65 Malibu SS that year and they pretty much waxed lyrical about this special sports car.

Thanks to this heavy promotion of the 65 Chevelle Malibu and the fact that only 201 of them were made meant that it was a runaway seller. Many Chevrolet dealerships never got to see one of these babies let along get the opportunity to sell one. Those that did get one on the car-yard had no trouble selling it.

Looking at the 65 Chevelle Malibu SS today, it is one of the most sought after classic muscle cars around. There are only around 60 to 70 of them left in good to pristine condition, so if you happen to come across one of these in a car graveyard then it is well worth the effort to bring it back to life.

    Wallpaper woody

Term used to describe the fake plastic side trimmed cars of the 50's, 60's and 70's that were supposed to look like they were real woody cars, but failed miserably

Toyota/Scion... What the fuck? A college grad gets a 1000 dollar discount, an active duty military servicemember only gets 500 dollars off

    That pisses me off.

Why should some kid who's done nothing useful for his country, comrades, squadron, ship, aircrew, brigade, platoon, or company

get a bigger courtesy discount from a car company?

Did some college group head over to Japan to help during the tsunami, free Kuwait from Hussein's hostile takeover, helped Haiti after their earthquake, etc etc? No.

Toyota/Scion is now on my shitlist

Why am I pissed off? I like military people, always have. Most of my uncles, cousins, grandfathers were in the military... and I was in the Navy crewing on 2 submarines and doing a tour as an MP. I worked on the USS Midway, aircraft carrier museum, and met thousands of Korean, Vietnam, and Gulf war vets... liked them all.

College grads on the other hand? Not much I've seen from them to respect. The high school to college types haven't saved lives, risked their own lives for their fellow soldiers/sailors/Marines, and they haven't accomplished a damn thing I think is useful by getting through 2 years of college classes. I did 2 years of mechanics and electronic classroom training before going to sea, and those classes didn't have general electives to waste time and get credits toward a diploma.

Ford / AAA have student auto shop contests

    http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/fordaaa-student-auto-skills-competition-crowns-nations-best-young-automotive-technicians-in-a-head-to-head-battle-of-skill-and-talent-96285968.html

Ford/AAA Student Auto Skills Competition Crowns Nation's Best Young Automotive Technicians in a Head-to-Head Battle of Skill and Talent

61st Annual Event Puts 50 State Championship Teams to the Test with a share of $11.5 Million in Scholarships on the Line

Each state is represented by a pair of students from the same high school and their instructor. A sample of feature stories from this year's field of state champions, include:

•Sydne Mikesell, 17, of Idaho Falls, Idaho, posted the nation's highest score during the state competition and will be one of two female competitors making a run at the National Title
•Daniel Sarzynski, 17, overcame brain cancer at the age of 7, and now the Baltimore resident has come full circle, partnering with 17-year old teammate Ernest Kuehne
•Ryan Hastings and Andrew Michaluk of Ann Arbor, Mich., hope to lean on home-field advantage and recent success – Hastings' brother, Zachary, finished second in the 2007 National Finals — to tip the scales in their favor.

The 2010 Ford/AAA Student Auto Skills began with 10,500 high school students and has been narrowed to 50 pairs of high school juniors and seniors representing their high schools and home states in a battle for the coveted title of best student auto tech team in the nation.

In addition to vying for a share of nearly $11.5 million in scholarships during the 2010 National Finals, the students also will compete for the opportunity to "job shadow" a Roush Fenway Racing NASCAR race team at its race shop and during a subsequent race weekend later this summer.

To prepare the next generation of automotive technicians, Ford and AAA have partnered to support automotive technology education in high schools across the country and encourage students to continue their education and pursue careers in the automotive service industry.

    High school auto shop class...

Ramona California, outlying city about 30 miles from San Diego, has a high school that had been brought to national attention because the auto shop class participated in Speed Channel's Drag Race High http://www.speedtv.com/programs/drag-race-high/

I just learned that GM had a top 10 list of high school shop classes, and Ramona was on it. Pretty cool

2009 was their year, nothing on Google since

Take the Hagerty survey to get them to know about what you do in the auto enthusiast hobby, and you'll have a shot at the $3000 prize

    the link is at http://www.surveygizmo.com/s3/635710/GroupA-HP?utm_source=ExactTarget&utm_medium=email&utm_term=&utm_content=Clients%20with%20Hagerty%20Plus%20-%201st%20batch&utm_campaign=2011%20Hobby%20Survey

If you are going to answer the questions with a willingness to inform them of your preferences, this will take about 20 minutes to complete. They will ask about the auto hobby related car shows you watch, the magazines you've read (question 51 is screwed up as it asks a multiple choice question and the answers are not in the same time units as teh question - year vs months) the organizations you may belong to, the major car shows you have attended, and if you way you are familiar with SEMA, HVA etc... the next question becomes "What is HVA known for? What is SEMA known for" to test you to see if you know what you're talking about.

Why did Dean Jeffries' Mantaray have a 289 Cobra engine? Cool story

Dean painted the first AC Cobra several times for Carroll Shelby.... painting it in different colors in order to fool magazine editors into thinking that many cars had been built... when actually only one prototype was.

So in appreciation Carroll gave Dean a 289 Cobra engine

Below is what it looked like in 1973 from http://www.huffreport.com/archives/oldpics/the70s.htm

Where did the salt of Bonneville go? The BLM effed up... they screwed up bad

The Save the salt coalition http://www.savethesalt.org/Save_the_Salt/Save_the_Salt%21.html and SEMA http://www.sema.org/ got BLM to take action, do a study, and conclude that a replenishment program would stabilize the Salt Flats.

But BLM went into an arrangement with the the last mining company, and didn't make a regulation that would continue to force all mining operations in Utah to adhere to the same level of replenishment, and leave the salt in the Bonneville Salt Flats to the national landmark that it is... and not being sold in bags to apply to roads.

The company currently mining in Intrepid Potash http://www.intrepidpotash.com/ Based in Denver, Colorado, Intrepid Potash, Inc. owns and operates Intrepid Potash - Moab, LLC, Intrepid Potash - Wendover, LLC, both potash mines located in Utah; and Intrepid Potash - New Mexico, LLC, with operations in Carlsbad, New Mexico.

Buy your salt from someone else if you like racing in general, or Bonneville specifically

I got motivated by reading Jean Jennings editorial in Automobile Magazine, Oct 2011 issue

Women, and the automotive world... specifically the Islamic/Muslim country of Saudi Arabia, which outlawed women drivers (male chauvinism, no religious text from their holy book, or decree from Muhammad spoke of cars, nor of women drivers)

So.. .  why don't men let women drive in Saudi Arabia? Women have been riding horses since before written history in Suadi Arabia... and the main bullshit line the Saudi govt ( the Saud family) give is that women are (by religious decree) supposed to modest... and sitting in a car behind the wheel is less modest than sitting a horse?

Chauvanism and religion have no logic, nor intelligent answer to a question that asks for facts.

This year of the Arab Spring of revolution the women in Suadi Arabia are protesting the nonsense and risking persecution, prosecution, harassment, and jail time with unreported indignities.

Show some support to those women... they are someone's sister, someone's mom. They don't deserve this crap simply because they were born in a country run by assholes.

To give them encouragement and support, let them know on Facebook and Twitter, or tell the US State Dept to keep hounding the Suadi Govt. http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/jun/21/hillary-clinton-saudi-female-drivers

Saudi woman aren't alone in dealing with dumb ass men keeping them from equal rights, General Motors in 1957 hired 9 women to be designers, and paid them less than the men. Indianapolis Motor Speedway didn't give women access to the pits til 1971

I just got motivated to write about this from the new issue of Automobile Magazine, Oct 2011

How much of a raise should a CEO get in a year? Which would seem reasonable? 10% or 510% ?

    in 2010

TRW CEO John Plant got 510% raise over his 2009 salary of 6.7 million
Ford CEO Alan Mulally 524% raise... yet his company has 14 billion in debt
Johnson Controls' Stephen Roell 424% raise

So... did those 3 companies make 4 to 500% better business decisions? Better profit? Better products?

    Doubt it.

I read about this in the article by Jamie Kitman in Automobile Magazine, his source, and the full story is at http://www.autonews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20110613/OEM02/306139854&sectioncat=product&template=printart

Plant's base salary was $1.9 million, but he made $28 million from stock option gains. Bonuses, stock awards and other means of compensation accounted for the rest of Plant's pay.
The $9.45 million bonus package Mulally received in 2010 was almost three times as much as his total compensation from 2009. The Ford CEO also earned $9.3 million in stock award gains and $1.4 million in base salary.

The median salary of CEOs who held their job for at least two years rose from $3 million in 2009 to $5.7 million in 2010, an increase of more than 90 percent from 2009, Equilar research analyst Aaron Boyd said.

Hungarian made cars, the difficult struggle against political turmoil, lack of manufacturing, and frequent bureaucratic red tape... all they want is to build cars!

Hungarian car enthusiasts Pal Negyesi and Csaba Hajdu have researched the Hungarian car history thoroughly, and made a 35 page PDF that exemplifies the spirit of perseverance to surmount obstacles in the way of progress.

Their focus is the Hungarian cars made between the years 1945 - 1990, but the inventors, craftsman, and innovators often began before 1945... and so did the national and intenational conflicts and restrictions that created a one of a kind unique situation that resulted in the USSR organization COMECON ruling of 1949 that of all the allied countries, only Hungary would not be allowed to build cars. Busses and trucks, yes... but not cars that the people could use for personal enjoyment, business travel, and product distribution (flowers, parcel delivery, etc etc)

Just as important as the automobile enthusiasts informative look, is the historian enthusiasts understanding of the myriad problems that were brought about by WW2, the USSR governing bureaucracy regulations, lack of car parts manufacturing (no car tire makers for example led to using airplane tail tires), political refusal to allow foreign investors, the revolution of 1956, the oil crisis of 1973, the fall of the USSR in 1990 dissolving all the previous infrastructure that was just beginning to make progress in loosening govt owned company restrictions in involvement in cooperative ventures to produce car and parts... all complicated the Hungarian auto enthusiasts ability to make cars.

But read about the many one off cars that were prototyped, microcars that were made and attempted during this time, the 3 wheelers that were declared "motorbike and sidecar" etc etc in order to bring mobility to the people.
